Are Songs Just Poems with Music?

Poem

the trees move as you keep looking forward
nothing happens where you aren't watching
there are only 2 things on your mind
"Watch where you're walking", and something more
something heavenly that drives you
so rhythmic it seems to move you forward without having to yourself
it doesn't just play, it gives you purpose to keep going forward
you take a couple of turns but it keeps playing
it is constant, it is captivating, it is close
it's not just the music, it's the meaning, the mood, the masterful use of melodies that motivates your mind
to keep moving

Broken

the trees move - as you keep looking forward
nothing happens - where you aren't watching
there are only
things on your mind
"Watch where you're walking"
and something more
something heavenly       that drives you
so rhythmic it seems to move you without having to yourself, it doesn't just play, it gives you purpose to

keep going forward

you take
                                    a couple
                of turns

but it keeps playing
it is constant;    it is captivating;    it is close
it's not just the music,
it's the meaning; the mood; the masterful use of melodies that motivates your mind

to keep moving

I haven't really written too much poetry in my life, or even read that much poetry. But I have listened to a lot of music, which - in some ways - can be compared to poetry. Not just things like "His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy ... mom's spaghetti" from Eminem's "Lose Yourself" which rhymes but more introspective, "poetic" lyrics, such as all the lyrics from Radiohead's "Nude" which read:

"Don't get any big ideas
They're not gonna happen
You paint yourself white
And fill up with noise
But there'll be something missing

Now that you found it
It's gone
Now that you feel it
You don't
You've gone off the rails

So don't get any big ideas
They're not gonna happen
You'll go to hell
For what your dirty mind is thinking"

This song, the music, vibe, and everything else intertwines with the lyrics to create a beautiful atmosphere that almost seems hopeless, which is a theme this song tries to convey. The song describes a world where any new thoughts or opinions are immediately shunned, which parallels what happened to them with some of their artistic choices. These simple lyrics, along with the breaks from the chorus to the verse give a sense of hopefulness but then dashes it down with the next part of the song.

This type of masterful songwriting along with the moving instrumental is what inspired my poem. I wanted to convey how just listening to an amazing song can pull you in and make you move on autopilot while you take in the entire song, appreciating it for all it's worth. I tried connecting some elements of the song to the outside world and I tried using some alliteration to drive the poem forward at the end. While breaking it, I thought of multiple things: where natural breaks in the poem would go, where unnatural pauses in the poem could make you think again, and just visual breaks. For example on line 9, I actually put two parts of the poem together to make it flow and speed up. Then I added a break to give a pause right before a climax. I felt that this gave the poem some motion and made it go somewhere instead of just being a singular direction with a singular speed. Hopefully it went alright.

BUSY/SIRENS - Saba feat. theMIND
