His Brain Power! It's over 9,000!
In many forms of media for a long time, there has been a myth that humans only use 10% of our brain's power. The implications of this idea being that once unlocked, our brains would be able to compute and work at such high levels that we would become more advanced than we have ever dreamed. While this thought is false, the idea of a higher consciousness that humans can achieve has been speculated for centuries, whether it be through a religion suggesting a connection to a higher power in figures such as the Buddha and Hindu sages, or people implicating a higher brainpower in intellectuals such as Socrates and Pythagoras. The idea of a higher consciousness may have been debated throughout history, but I believe people can come close to achieving, if not achieving a higher level of consciousness through various means.
In Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse, the title character seems to encounter many people throughout his journey that either believe in a higher consciousness and are trying to achieve it, such as the Shramanas and Brahmins, or people that seem to have already achieved it, such as Gautama or Vasudeva the ferryman. This leads to Siddhartha himself achieving this goal at the end, hearing the voice of everyone ringing through him, and being able to harbor love for everything on the earth, while being peaceful and enjoying his life. While I was reading this, I was in awe at not just the descriptive passages describing this state of mind, but the journey he took to come to this point. It made no sense but made all the sense in the world at the same time. While I considered that he was a really bad person for a long time in his life, giving in to his vices and leading a life of sin, it truly made sense that he could only achieve this after living all walks of life, and experiencing everything, finding enlightenment the way he wanted to.
Now, I'm not saying that I'm going to do everything he did to achieve this, but new experiences are a great way to not just learn new things, but experience new feelings, meet new people, make new connections, and explore different types of relationships. This is just one way I can push myself as close to achieving a higher consciousness as possible step by step. While this may work for me this year or long term, different paths work for different people, so see what's out there for you.
